Our Review of That Weekend

I am not saying it to boast but it is a fact that almost after going through 30% of the book, I could see how the book was going to end. My prediction turned out to be true too. Want to know the weird part? That even when I know how everything was going to turn out, it felt like I was cheated of a good ending. Maybe that’s because at the back of my mind I was hoping that it would turn out to be something else and it didn’t. I think. I am being cryptic now. It’s because if I say anything more, I will give out major spoilers for the book. Trust me that it would ruin the experience of the book. So apart from certain plot loopholes, I, in general, did like the book.

The book revolves around the mystery as to what happened to three teens who had taken a trip to the lake for “That Weekend”. Only one of the three returns and she doesn’t even remember what happened. So the whole journey of the book is finding out what happened with the other two? With a central character with Amnesia, you and the central character are piecing together pieces together as the book proceeds. This is a bit of gameplay of patience. It takes a while for things to fall into a fast pace as before that both the central character and book is dealing with the Amnesia angle. Hence why it took almost 30% of the book for me to come up with the prediction. It was more of an inkling that kept getting more concrete and finally proven.

If you have read the book then you might understand when I say that the end was kind of bittersweet. I am pretty sure that the people who didn’t like the book must have broken up with the book over the climax of the plot. Till then the thrill and suspense keep you on a steady path taking you into the past of the central character and their bond. So you are also hanging by a thread and waiting to see the light. So when you see the light eventually it either blinds you or feels feeble to not match up to the expectation. 

That is exactly what is happening with the book. You would either totally fall for it because you loved the climax of the story or you would hate it because of the climax of the story. ( I was in the latter group even though I had predicted it but still kind of hurt when it happened 😛)

Conclusion

So, in conclusion, let me say that the book is a good thriller. It has got a good narration, story flow and quite an array of characters too. It’s the plot ending that will make or break the book for you but then that is something up to the perception of each reader. It’s dark, Psychological and deals with some pretty intense topics. So because of that, the book could also be a huge trigger warning. I wasn’t a fan of the “Big Secret” of the plot but I would still say that it was a good thriller.
