Our Review of The Night Shift by Alex Finlay
HOLY GOLY MOLLY !! This book is everything that is hyped. I am too gobsmacked to describe and write a review, which is ironic considering I am here wasting everybody’s time talking about the book. right? So here we go. The Night Shift is the perfect pick for a Halloween read. It has that spook factor. Wait !! It is more of a serial killer thing. So yeah pick anytime you want but I am pretty sure, you are in for a whirlwind read and in the best way. Some twists are quite literally plot-changing. Maybe some of you may have seen the culprit from the start but I certainly didn’t and I take full pleasure in saying that. When the book sort of started showing light on the culprit, it was like a bulb going on in my head and it took me by surprise. That, people, is what I love in my books. Shock me. ( But of course, in a good, shock me other way and I will SMITE you. So considered yourself warned)
So about the book. Yeah, it is perfect because it keeps churning everything upside down and taking you through different angles. Exactly like a monster ride. Just when you think the ride isn’t turned upside down, it airlifts and you watch the bloody Grim reaper waving at you from the ground. (Too much?) The point is that the book has a pretty exhilarating plot. Fair warning though there might be a dip in the middle that is just the silence before things hit the roof (and you know what usually hits the roof…right)
I had this book on audiobook and fortunately, it was a dual narrator thing so it was pretty easy to get into the vibe and enjoy the book. It opens with a hook, grabs you in and helps you stay there with its easy flow of narration. You might want to step back if assault or trauma are your triggers and blood makes you want to touch the ground on sight. The book does deal with some pretty harsh and hard stuff so you might want to buckle up.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the book is a perfect thriller read. Especially if you are alone and secluded at night. Not to forget if you are a night shifter worker 😛 you might want to put on this for your night reading. Jokes apart the book is pretty amazing and pretty gripping in its narration and storytelling technique. It also has some strongly etched characters with their flaws and tribulations.
