Book Boyfriend by Claire Kingsley

About the Book-Book Boyfriend by Claire Kingsley

Alex Lawson might as well be the hottest book boyfriend imaginable. A gorgeous, fun, romantic, possessive man. The best part? He’s real.

For adorkable bookworm Mia Sullivan, he’s a dream come true, straight off the pages of her favorite romance novels. From the moment they meet, and he offers to buy her books, she’s smitten.

Lying to Mia was never part of Alex’s plan. Neither was finding success as a secret romance author using a female pen name. But sometimes life takes unexpected turns. Like realizing the woman he’s falling for is his alter ego’s online best friend.

Online, Mia thinks Alex is an author named Lexi. In person, she knows he’s all man. And as their story turns into a whirlwind romance, she wonders if they’re headed for a real happily ever after.

But if she discovers his secret, he could lose everything. Including her.

Author’s note: an awkward book lover and a secret romance author. A bookstore meet cute, an angry cat named Fabio, lots of laughs, and a big HEA that will leave you swooning.

“At least he’s real and not some book boyfriend or whatever.
I swear, reading so much has ruined you for real men.”

Our Review of Book Boyfriend by Claire Kingsley

This is one of those books that I have no clue how to feel about as there are things about the book that I thought were brilliant. Then some things were like ….meh! But in general, it is a good one but not that great. So it’s like a good enough book but at the same time lacks that X factor to make it stand out, but then there are things in the book that I thought were brilliant in inception.

To pick out the things that didn’t click for me is the fact that the book just goes from zero to 100 almost in a paragraph and that to me was like …..WOH what just happened …sort of thing. I felt the romance was too quick and applied and lacked a bit of natural course. To add fuel to this is the intimate scenes which I absolutely couldn’t digest for the fact that I felt it was sort of filled in forcefully and took on a bit of SMUT tone with no warning. But then again I am not someone who likes much of SMUT as I believe the art is in subtlety and wording it in a way that the emotions should be evoked with words and not dictated. But this is just a me thing.

So while those bothered me, I found the premise adorable and perfect for romance fiction. Above all things, I loved the little trickery and perhaps ironies thrown by the book. The first irony is that the female lead is a book addict and book reviewer who has a blog and look at the irony of the fact that I am writing a review of it. Since the female lead is a book reviewer and has this passion for books but necessarily not for the books that are deemed “quality reading” by society, I fell in love with those portions of the book where we get to see her passion for books and how she deals with people who feel romance fiction is not “quality reading”… there were so many things including how she wants to stay up all night just because she wants to finish a book or how she needs to write a review and even how it can even be scary at times… so all these was such fun to read being so relatable. Then the whole ending is another ball game of irony and I can’t talk about it without being a spoiler so let’s just say that I loved the whole idea but not sure if it works towards making the book better. But that idea was in itself brilliant. It evoked a total inception effect and that did make me a bit happy about it.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I would say that for me, the Book Boyfriend was a combination of hits and misses and in an individual capacity there are quite a few brilliant things. The theme of romance books as a base for the book was nice. So yes the book is a good fun read but one that could easily get drowned in the heap of other romance novels.
