Book Review : The Shadow Queen by C.J. Redwine (Ravenspire)

Reading Time: 4 minutes

You got Magic, dragons, prince charming, A runaway princess, Wicked step mother, Evil Queen., Oh and apples too. so you got all the fairy tale elements intact. what else could you ask from the book. Shadow queen could very well be your new fairy tale book even though it is actually a fairy tale retelling. Though when i started out the book, i wasn’t exactly sure as to which story was being retold because there was a lot of stuff happening. Shadow queen definitely makes for an exciting read

The Shadow Queen Official Synopsis

Lorelai Diederich, crown princess and fugitive at large, has one mission: kill the wicked queen who took both the Ravenspire throne and the life of her father. To do that, Lorelai needs to use the one weapon she and Queen Irina have in common—magic. She’ll have to be stronger, faster, and more powerful than Irina, the most dangerous sorceress Ravenspire has ever seen.

In the neighboring kingdom of Eldr, when Prince Kol’s father and older brother are killed by an invading army of magic-wielding ogres, the second-born prince is suddenly given the responsibility of saving his kingdom. To do that, Kol needs magic—and the only way to get it is to make a deal with the queen of Ravenspire, promise to become her personal huntsman…and bring her Lorelai’s heart.

But Lorelai is nothing like Kol expected—beautiful, fierce, and unstoppable—and despite dark magic, Lorelai is drawn in by the passionate and troubled king. Fighting to stay one step ahead of the dragon huntsman—who she likes far more than she should—Lorelai does everything in her power to ruin the wicked queen. But Irina isn’t going down without a fight, and her final move may cost the princess the one thing she still has left to lose.

The Shadow Queen RWAT Take

Take a twist to the classic fairy tales with lots of magic and golden dragon and you get shadow queen. Although i must say that there were a lot of Snow White and huntsman scene revisited in the book which was kind of weird . Or was the book a retelling of the movie? (hmmm interesting ) The book actually has some scenes from the movie or at least it felt so because i could imagine even the costume to be just like Charlize Thereon in Snow white and huntsman

I did felt while reading the book that the author has a tendency to narrate her story with long sentences and all of them carrying multiple facts. This though is not a fault per say but makes reading a bit strenuous. Take for example my review, My full stops comes almost after two paragraphs. That is how i like to write but i am trying hard to break out of this habit

So coming back to the book. The book has used all of your YA fantasy elements to the core. A teenager given all the worldly responsibilities and duties while the adult folks just standby watching teenagers run the world. Ok fine. i will stop being mean. The fact is that i really  don’t have much to say about the book as it uses plot components used by your usual YA fantasy and yet is an entertaining read. It stands with its own identity and definitely makes for all the fun.

Conclusion

To be honest there is nothing exceptionally out of the box when it comes to the plot or the plot developments but yet the main point is that the book is an entertaining read. if you stop hunting for similarities with original fairytales or in my case the movie or even to other YA fantasy, you will get a good adventurous read filled with magic and dragons
