Book Review: The Girl in Red by Christina Henry

Genius. Simply Genius. Its like the author had taken notes on how the usual book heroines behaved and created a character that would do completely opposite of it.  An amazing and on point book that could definitely be a trailblazer for Dystopian. Read this book only for Red, Our heroine in every sense. The Girl in Red shines because of its main character who is simply rebel in every way and remains so till the end. There is no romance, just a survival story and one at the best at it. I loved the brilliant plot techniques.

The Girl in Red Official Synopsis

From the national bestselling author of Alice comes a postapocalyptic take on the perennial classic “Little Red Riding Hood”…about a woman who isn’t as defenseless as she seems.

It’s not safe for anyone alone in the woods. There are predators that come out at night: critters and coyotes, snakes and wolves. But the woman in the red jacket has no choice. Not since the Crisis came, decimated the population, and sent those who survived fleeing into quarantine camps that serve as breeding grounds for death, destruction, and disease. She is just a woman trying not to get killed in a world that doesn’t look anything like the one she grew up in, the one that was perfectly sane and normal and boring until three months ago.

There are worse threats in the woods than the things that stalk their prey at night. Sometimes, there are men. Men with dark desires, weak wills, and evil intents. Men in uniform with classified information, deadly secrets, and unforgiving orders. And sometimes, just sometimes, there’s something worse than all of the horrible people and vicious beasts combined.

Red doesn’t like to think of herself as a killer, but she isn’t about to let herself get eaten up just because she is a woman alone in the woods….

The Girl in Red RWAT Take

The girl in the Red is a survival story and can in every sense act as a guide. That is what i felt while reading this book that it can be a perfect guide on how to behave when apocalypse is near. The book has some of the best well thought out characters I have seen in my reading life. Every character felt was created naturally and not forcefully pushed into the scene for the sake of plot development.

The whole reason why one should read this book is for our heroine. Her sense of survival and a perfect prototype for a strong and clear headed, unwavering character that sticks to all that she promised and started out as. Although having said all these, i am a bit confused about the ending as I felt that there was something really missing or felt needed perhaps more clarity. But then It could just be me or my inability to let go of the character and the book yet

I loved the book and I loved how a lot of thought was put into the creation of the character and it made all the difference in the book. It was so amusing to see how indirectly mocking the usual book heroines and doing exact opposite. It is fun, fast and unpredictable. Fabulous
