Book Review: Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo (The Shadow and Bone Trilogy #1)

She is the queen. Leigh Bardugo is the queen for me.I am ready to build a temple for her for simply creating these fabulous work of art. I was hooked to Shadow and Bone from the very first page that’s how quickly I fell for this series. well technically, I have only read the first book to make that quick judgement but in my experience, if the first book itself opens such beauty, the sequels have a lot of scope to work around.

Shadow and Bone Official Synopsis

Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.

Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.

Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha . . . and the secrets of her heart.

Shadow and Bone RWAT Take

If you follow my reviews, one thing you will notice is that I crib a lot about books following cliche paths. Especially romance. Almost all the paranormal romances, are destined for the same fate from the get go and it is made evident from the beginning of the book. Well technically, this book too has that same disease of adding usual romance angles but that is also where it is completely different too. Hence the reason why Leigh Bardugo is queen for me. She, even in a cliche romance angle, has managed to offer something really unique and beautiful.

Now I see why people all over have fallen for the series and there are some serious fandoms for the Greisha world. yes there are plots developments that are cliche but it is weaved and crafted so brilliantly that the book feels on a different path altogether

Conclusion

Its an amazing series to embark on and I can’t wait to see how the series unfolds with its sequels. The characters are simply the best and haunting I have ever seen. The book gives you some serious hangovers as I spend weeks looking at the fan arts and tumbler feeds for the series because I simply couldn’t get enough of the characters, the romance and the book in general.
