Where do i get a refund for the book ? Seriously, The way the book starts, You would start building your expectations only to be get splashed by cold water after mere two chapters when you see the book coming down to usual antics of paranormal romance and that too without a clear path and warning. Serpent and Dove goes to my disappointed shelf with immediate effect.
Serpent & Dove Official Synopsis
Bound as one to love, honor, or burn.
Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned.
Sworn to the Church as a Chasseur, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. His path was never meant to cross with Lou’s, but a wicked stunt forces them into an impossible union—holy matrimony.
The war between witches and Church is an ancient one, and Lou’s most dangerous enemies bring a fate worse than fire. Unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, a choice must be made.
And love makes fools of us all.
Serpent & Dove RWAT Take
Technically the book has everything, good flow, pace, narration and language. So where did it go wrong for me? In its theme. The book starts almost with a bang and you see this powerful strong female character that lure you to the book with so much promises especially with the plot. I am warming my seat with this book in one hand and cup of hot coffee, ready to get immersed in a beautiful fiction world. Two chapters down and my cup of coffee gets replaced with bottles of wine and the warm seat is on fire with fury.
Its not that the writing or book is bad but the fact that the book completely lost its track and gave away to the worn out paranormal track of falling for the enemy and craving the forbidden apple. (Damn this apple, keep appearing in everything) That is what ruined it for me. The opening of the book was amazing and if they had taken a different route, this book would have been something of epic level because I loved the settings, characters and core theme but not the direction of the plot.
So technically I felt the plot was cliche and that is why i didn’t like the book. This also means that if you love the usual Paranormal romance tracks, you will love this book and perhaps even enjoy it inspite of its worn out story angles.
Can we talk about the cover people? That cover is what lured me to the book. The designer needs all the appreciation for doing such a fantastic job. I am a sucker for covers. I am Clearly on the opposite line of the crowd that says Don’t judge a book by its cover because i totally do.
While Shelby Mahurin would be hating my guts and review right now, I still believe that she is a fantastic writer and has a brilliant eye for beauty which shows in her book cover.
