Book Review: Furthermore by Tahereh Mafi

All i need to say is that it had furthermore to go before it came out as a convincing story worth investing. The book is nothing but a twisted Alice in wonderland

Furthermore by Tahereh Mafi – Official Synopsis

Colour and magic combine in this enchanting new middle grade fantasy from the bestselling author of the Shatter Me series.

Born as blank as canvas in a world brimming with colour and magic, Alice’s pale skin and milk-white hair mark her as an outcast. Because, for the people of Ferenwood, colour and magic are one and the same. And since the disappearance of her beloved father, Alice is more determined than ever to prove herself and her own magical abilities.

To do so she’ll have to travel into the mythical, dangerous land of Furthermore, with the help of a fiercely annoying boy named Oliver. But nothing in Furthermore is as it seems, and it will take all of Alice’s wits to find her father and return him safely home.

Furthermore by Tahereh Mafi – RWAT Take

The basic trouble is that the basics of the story itself is not clear in the book which makes it more difficult for the book to prove itself. When i read the synopsis, i was completely confused as to what they were trying to say and achieve and the same is happening inside the book as well.

Furthermore happens in a fantasy world and without concrete and vivid details about this elaborate world that the author creates, it becomes difficult for one to see the events that is happening in the book. While Alice in wonderland remains a classic, retelling it should also cater to the fact that each world and imagination should be lucid and pristine enough for the readers to indulge as well and lack of details will spoil all the fun.

For almost 40 percent of the book, i couldn’t understand anything that was happening in the book with full clarity. I could absorb half of what was going on but the rest of them was just plain words for me. The basic theme in itself wasn’t explained or well worked on and this eventually only started creating more and more rift in the book

I guess the main underlying theme of the book was avoided in the rush to create all these different fantasy world. The author clearly forgets to paint more picture about the central character, her weakness and strength. All the book does is showing her daily activities and emotions, sans any clear picture to the character.

Conclusion

While the plot itself is a bit chaotic, the language doesn’t help at all. In the quest to create a fantasy world, the author tried a different format for narration which sadly only make it even more troubling and tedious. The language has its moments but unfortunately it is also the reason why you can’t understand half of the book. A lot has gone wrong for the book. There is a lack of strong base which is evident throughout the book.
