I got this book through my newly revived net galley account and this was the first book i had landed on. I am still not sure as to what attracted me to the book. Perhaps my reason behind picking the book, Crazy for Alice lies somewhere between the impact of the cover and the name or perhaps the synopsis. But what ever the reason was, i loved this book. Scratch that. I lived this book yes LIVED.. it was that alluring
Crazy For Alice by Alex Dunn – official Synopsis
Donnie Darko meets Pleasantville in this dark urban fantasy about sixteen-year-old Ben Howard. When Ben accidentally kills his father and is sectioned after a failed suicide attempt, he escapes the guilt by seeking solace deep within the recesses of his own mind.
Waking in a strange ethereal black and white world, where most people exist as living statues, Ben leaps from New York skyscrapers into African jungles without fear of injury, severed from his emotions, until he meets and falls in love with Alice. But, no sooner does he settle into this strange, new existence, he’s traumatically catapulted back to the brutal reality he left behind.
Nobody believes he’s spent the last six months in a Gray World. Not his neurotic mother, his policeman brother Gavin, or his friends Mitch and Wendy, and certainly not Dr. McKenzie who’s threatening to give him even more pills. They all think he’s crazy, and why wouldn’t they when he’s been in some strange coma locked up in a mental asylum?
Crazy For Alice by Alex Dunn – RWAT Take
Even though initially i had a bit trouble easing myself into the plot, eventually i was able to see the charm of the book and gradually i was able to enjoy the gray world that the book talk about in length . One thing is for sure that the book is not for everyone as the theme and the treatment of the book is quite different and it maynot be a comfortable setting for all. Initially the book and its setting was a bit hard for me to digest and get in ease in with but eventually i could see myself being able to picture the world and its settings in my mind.
In the beginning somehow i kept getting the vibes that the book was going to be a little melancholic and educator of mental illness and right after couple of chapters, the book simply morphed itself into an amazing adventure ride full of suspense and thriller. Once the book brought in its full power with the plot growing and travelling into much interesting alleys, i simply couldn’t resist and i ended up finishing the book in one sitting. The thrills n twists and the romance all created such a cinematic experience that this book will stay in my head for days to come
What an amazing ride. exhiliariting. The best part of the book is that the narration and the flow of the book is really fast paced and captivating. It does not keep burdening you with unnecessary plot details or developments. The book luckily is not set out to preach on mental health and its side effects but gives you a plot that will keep you glued to the pages
My suggestion to anybody who is picking up this book is to not haste your judgement about the book with the initial few chapters. Just give it a bit time because trust me the second half of the book is really worth the wait and the meat of the book lies by its second half. I loved it and had an amazing experience with it .
