Book Review: And The Ocean Was Our Sky by Patrick Ness, Rovina Cai

Don’t ask me any questions and i will tell you no lies. Thats all i can say when it comes to explaining this book. Honestly if you ask me what happened in the book, i would be speechless. To say, it was a picture book (and that too a pretty one) and i couldn’t understand anything in it is the tragedy of the whole scene here . what the story was saying and what happened in there is still a mystery to me. I can tell you bits and parts but even that i am doubtful would be correct. In all sense if i loved anything in the book, it was flipping through those amazing illustrations. You should know this about me that i am a gone case when it comes to illustrations and artwork. I fall hard for things like that and that is the reason why i didn’t even bother to see what the book was all about because i just needed to grab this book as a collector piece

And The Ocean Was Our Sky Official Synopsis

With harpoons strapped to their backs, the proud whales of Bathsheba’s pod live for the hunt, fighting in the ongoing war against the world of men. When they attack a ship bobbing on the surface of the Abyss, they expect to find easy prey. Instead, they find the trail of a myth, a monster, perhaps the devil himself…

As their relentless Captain leads the chase, they embark on a final, vengeful hunt, one that will forever change the worlds of both whales and men.

And The Ocean Was Our Sky RWAT Take

And the ocean was our sky is a mystery to me in terms of plots and story. It is not a quick in and out kind of book. One thing is for sure that the plot has lots of layers to it. A lot of it is psychological and metaphorical and i don’t think it is easier to grasp especially if you are pigeon brained like me. Well i will admire the fact that you tried to explain the story with the help of pictures but i am sorry it didn’t work because i got most interested in the artwork than what the book was all about. I blame you Rovina Cai for making such beautiful masterpieces.

Fine i admit this book was not my cup of tea. But i will never ever regret buying this book. Infact this would be one of the most treasured possessions in my library. Something that i would mention in my will to be buried along with me so that i can read it in my graves over and over again because it is a collector’s item for sure. Oh yeah right the plot and the other stuffs…. well what can i probably say when i myself had trouble wrapping my brain. It is definitely based somewhat on the whole Moby dick saga..(or is it? ) anyway it is a philosophical tale of whales surviving against a massive attack. Thats all i could grasp as rest you would have to find it yourself and if possible explain it to me as well 🙁

Maybe this was too intense and deeper of a story to be told in a few words. That might be the reason why it couldn’t fully come into shape. or perhaps this is just a book meant for high IQ and i simply ain’t that people. Makes me really wonder about my capability if i couldn’t understand a picture book ( screaming in pain and drowning in alcohol as we speak)

So to conclude the book is a beautiful work of art. Story is on a different level and may not be easy and appealing for every taste. At least for me the story was giant puzzle which made sense in bits and parts but lot of it being philosophical stuff went over my head. Be it anything i would still say that the book is worth buying for its beautiful artwork
